Pink Skull
The dystopian frontier is near, but never fear. In the new era of endlessness where wehide ourselves as humans among androids, there is hope. Pink Skull, the producer duo ofJulian Grefe and Justin Geller rip out the tracking chip and jump the grid on a quest forpurity among putridity.
In 2004, Julian Grefe, veteran Philadelphia DJ and producer, teamed up with 611 Recordsalum and co-conspirator, Justin Geller, on the inaugural mix for renegade dance purveyorRVNG INTL’s series of DJ compilations. Their collaboration and mutual love of earlydisco and primitive electronic music spawned Pink Skull. Releasing three full lengthsand a slew of 12’s, the DJ/producer duo have also remixed left-of-center dance tracks forSpank Rock, Plastic Little, Architecture in Helsinki, Health, Bear in Heaven and David Gilmore Girls.
In 2006 Grefe and Geller expanded Pink Skull into a live band, with the addition ofplayers Jeremy Gewertz (drums), Mike Hammel (bass) and Sam Murphy (guitar) andAdam Sparkles (programming). Grefe and Geller scoured the Philadelphia scene forrock solid veteran players who understood what the band was striving to do; a mix ofexperimental electronica and a throbbing 4/4 dancefloor groove. Their high energyshows re-interpret their works via multi-percussionist arrangements and focus on theinterplay of the programmed instrumentation and the dynamics of the extemporaneouslive playing.
Coming Spring 2011, is their new full length release, Psychic Welfare on RNVG. Theirnew sound is more tighter and more focused and expands on musical influences of theirprevious LP’s. Taking elements from Kosmische, early Chicago house, and 70’s eraexperimental electronica with a Roxy Music pop sensibility..
